Welcome to the transformative world of Iyengar Yoga! We at the BKS Iyengar Yoga are thrilled to have you join our community. Whether you're new to yoga or transitioning from another style, Iyengar Yoga offers a unique approach that emphasizes precision, alignment, and the use of props to support all practitioners. Here's what you need to know to get started.
Understanding Iyengar Yoga:
Iyengar Yoga, named after its founder B.K.S. Iyengar, is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail and alignment. This style of yoga is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical ability, thanks to its innovative use of props like blocks, belts, and chairs & more.
What to Expect in Your First Class:
   - Sequencing: We'll start with poses that gradually prepare your body for more challenging asanas. Our focus is on alignment and the sensations you feel, ensuring a mindful practice.
   - Props to Support You: Props are here to help you achieve the correct posture and deepen your practice. These tools make poses accessible and safe for everyone.
   - Clear Demonstrations: Either the teacher or a student will demonstrate the pose. This way, everyone can follow along comfortably.Â
   - A Quiet Space: In Iyengar Yoga, we dive deep into consciousness, so there won't be any music to distract from your practice. It's all about connecting with your body and mind.
What to Bring:
   - Comfortable Clothing: Wear clothes that allow movement and enable instructors to see your alignment. Preferably something that shows the knees.Â
   - Yoga Mat: If you have one, bring your mat, but most studios, including ours, provide mats.
   - Personal Items: Place in the cubbies provided in the lobby, bring valuables, keys, wallet etc. in the studio and place them on the shelf provided.
   - Open Mind: Come with a willingness to learn and explore new ways of moving.
Tips for Beginners:
   - Listen to Your Body: Move at your own pace and honor your body's limits.
   - Ask Questions: Instructors are there to help. Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure about a pose.
   - Be Patient: Progress takes time. Enjoy the journey and the benefits that come with consistent practice.
   - New Language: In Iyengar Yoga we say the sanskrit and english names of the poses. So don’t be alarmed when you don’t understand what the teacher is saying.Â
