Thinking about starting yoga? You're not alone. At BKS Iyengar Yoga Studio of Dallas, we often hear these questions from newcomers. Let's address the most common concerns that might be holding you back from attending a class.
Is Yoga Right for Me?
Yes. Yoga is truly for everybody. Whether you're young or old, flexible or stiff, yoga meets you where you are. The Iyengar Yoga method particularly emphasizes proper alignment and modifications to suit all body types, ailments and abilities.
What if I'm Not Flexible?
This is like saying you're too dirty to take a shower. Flexibility is not a prerequisite - it's a result. Iyengar Yoga uses props and modifications to help you work properly and within your current range of motion.
Which Style Should I Choose as a Beginner?
All of our teachers are Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers who emphasize proper alignment to build a strong foundation in the poses. Classes progress gradually, ensuring you learn the basics, thoroughly before progressing to advanced postures.
What Should I Wear and Bring?
Wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows movement without being too loose, please wear something where we can see the knees. At our studio, we provide all necessary props - mats, yoga bricks, belts, blankets & more. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn.
How Often Should I Practice?
Start with 2-3 classes per week. This gives you enough time to progress while allowing your body to adjust. Many of our students find this frequency ideal for developing a consistent practice. Please see our website for membership tiers.
Will I Be Able to Keep Up?
Our classes are structured to accommodate all levels. Iyengar Yoga emphasizes precision over speed, and our teachers provide clear, detailed instructions.
What Are the Health Benefits?
Yoga views health holistically – the integration of body, mind, and spirit. Benefits extend beyond physical wellness to mental clarity and spiritual growth. Yoga offers numerous benefits including:
Better posture and alignment
Increased strength and balance
Stress reduction
Enhanced focus and mental clarity
Improved breathing awareness
When Will I See Results?
Every body is different, but most students notice improved posture and reduced stress within their first few weeks. Physical changes become more apparent with consistent practice over 2-3 months.
What Should I Eat Before Class?
Practice on an empty stomach or wait 4 hours after a proper meal. A light snack 1-2 hours before class is fine if needed.
